Mathematical Detective

Today sees the launch of Geocentric Datum Brunei Darussalam by the Guest of Honour YM Dato Haji Mohd Rozan, the Permanent Secretary Administration & Finance of the Ministry of Development. The event started with the recital of Surah Al-Fatihah & followed by the opening speech by Hj Mohd jamil, JUA Brunei Darussalam.

Well actually i wasn't there to witness the launch due to work where we went to Kg Sabun to locate the "Lombong Arang Batu". I remember stories that there was an antique car at the jungle. But it came to our suprise that the car wasn't there!!! I wonder who took it?? Yes we did locate the place, bits of the old train aswell as the cave. Only that we were left dissapointed knowing that the we cant find the railway.. Nanti ko ah.. bakal ja sekajap ja tadi hehe. Anyway, here's a brief technical description of Geocentric Datum Brunei Darusaalam.

Geocentric Datum Brunei Darussalam is the new Brunei Coordinate System replacing the existing horizontal network of Borneo Triangulation 1948 (BT48). It is part of a Global Coordinate Reference frame and is directly compatible with the Global Positioning System (GPS).

The main advantage is that GDBD coordinates are immediately compatible with global coordinates obtained from GPS and with other coordinate systems adopted in many parts of the world. It will also allow an efficient exchange of data and linking products from various information systems.

GDBD is based on an international mathematical model which 'best fits' the shape of the whole earth, with its centre coinciding with the earth's centre of mass.
