Brunei Darussalam joined the rest of the world in turning the lights out for Earth Hour, an initiative started by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) to save energy around the world for an hour.
Leading hotels in the sultanate, notably The Empire Hotel & Country Club and Sheraton Utama Hotel, switched off the lights for an hour to join the global initiative. It was the first time that Empire Hotel and Country Club turned off the light at the main atrium lobby (from 8.30pm to 9.30pm).
The Chairman of Brunei Investment Agency, Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Kerma Dato Seri Setia (Dr) Hj Awang Abu Bakar bin Hj Apong who is also the Minister of Communications, along with Executive Director Hajah Zetty Zarirah Dato Paduka Hj Metassn, led the candle-lighting seconds prior to lights off at the Empire Hotel CC.
Acting General Manager Mr Sean Boyle said: "As part of the world's effort, we are delighted to take part by turning off the lights in our beautiful atrium and we are overwhelmed by the spirit and support given by all team members as well as guests toward this worthy cause."
Some 4,000 candles were lit up inside the hotel by guests and personnel.
